Herat University Medical Students’ Association (HUMSA), in collaboration with the Cultural and Student Services Committee (Educational Affairs Section) of the Herat Faculty of Medicine, successfully conducted a large-scale Vision Screening Campaign across several schools in Herat.

This initiative reflects the continued commitment of Herat University Medical Students’ Association (HUMSA) toward promoting public health, preventive medicine, community engagement, and student-led healthcare services. Through organizing scientific and community-based programs, HUMSA strives to strengthen health awareness and improve access to early health screening services within the community.

Vision screening plays a vital role in the early detection of eye disorders and refractive errors among children, particularly in countries like Afghanistan where access to regular ophthalmologic care and early screening services remains limited in many communities. Undiagnosed vision problems can negatively affect a child’s learning ability, academic performance, social development, and overall quality of life. Early identification and timely referral for treatment can prevent long-term visual complications and support healthier educational and developmental outcomes for students.

This health campaign was carried out by about 100 medical students of the Herat Faculty of Medicine who had previously completed specialized training in vision screening procedures. The campaign aimed to promote awareness regarding eye health and strengthen preventive healthcare services within the school community.

A total of 1,470 male and female students from preparatory classes and grades one through three benefited from this screening process. Comprehensive and well-documented data were collected during the campaign and will later be made available to students and researchers for further scientific studies and medical research.

The entire process was supervised and evaluated by Assistant Professor Dr. Sayed Farooq Hosseini, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammadullah Yaqoubi (Head of the Cultural and Student Services Committee), and Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammad Masoudi, ensuring the quality and transparency of the program.

Students identified with potential eye health problems will be referred to Roshana Eye Hospital for free comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations and further medical assessment.
